Mari

There are about 400 000 Mari language speaking people. Half of them live in Mari Republic, also known as Mari El and the other half in Bashkiria and other nearby areas in Russia. Mari language has two standard forms, Meadow Mari and Hill Mari. Hill Mari is clearly smaller group with 23 000 speakers. Mari language has official status in Mari El, alongside with Russian language. We organised two Mari language comics workshops in 2017, one in the capital city Joshkar-Ola and another one in the office of Morko Mlande newspaper in Morki, Eastern Mari +El. The participants were both Meadow and Hill Mari speakers. Our partner in Mari El is the Mari language web magazine Arslan.
