Khanty

A total of about 10,000 people speak Khanty in the Khanty-Mansi Autonomous District, the Yamalo-Nenets Autonomous District and the Tomsk Region in Siberia. Khanty language has no official status in Russia. It has three main dialects: Kazym, Shuryshkar and Surgut. It is actively used in publications like books, children’s literature and Khanty language newspaper Khanty Yasang. We have organised three workshops in Khanty area in 2016-17. After our workshops our partners from the Ethnographic Museum of Kazym and Numsang Yoh culture camp have organised their own comics workshops and exhibitions. They also printed postcards with their comics, and took part in a children’s comics contest with the theme ‘Mythology of Yugra’. A local Russian-language newspaper Beloyarskiye Vesti has published their comics in Khanty.
